Children's Learning and Development

Early year's education is the foundation for learning values and attitudes on which children build the rest of their lives on. At Darling Buds we have qualified experienced staff that will stimulate and encourage your child/ren in their early years of development. We follow the Birth to Three Matters Framework for children under 3 years of age and The Early Years Foundation Phase for children 3 years and over.

The Foundation Phase curriculum is planned as a progressive framework to meet the diverse needs of all children through play, including those who are at an earlier stage of development and those who are more able. It focuses on seven statutory areas of learning which are:

  • Personal and Social Development, Well-Being and Cultural Diversity
  • Language, Literacy and Communication Skills
  • Mathematical Development
  • Welsh Language Development
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  • Physical Development
  • Creative Development

The Foundation Phase is based on the principle that day nurseries offer a strong foundation for future learning and achievement through a developmentally appropriate curriculum, which is in accordance with each child's particular needs and interests.

The Birth to Three Matter Framework supports the learning of children under 3 years, it turns it's attention to 'the child', keeping away from specific curriculum headings but bearing in mind the skills that babies and young children are developing and the environment that should be provided for them to achieve such skills. The framework focuses on four main areas of learning and development which are:

  1. A strong child
  2. A healthy child
  3. A competent learner
  4. A skilful communicator

The purpose of the framework is to work in partnership with the parents/carers to ensure that young children are valued and celebrated, that they are seen as competent learners and learn through a safe and stimulating environment with confident and trusting adults.

At Darling Buds children learn through adult led structured play and will experience activities that include recognition of their name, colours, shapes, letters, and numbers also story-time, singing, creative activities, pencil and scissor control, outdoor garden games, dance and movement. They also learn from spontaneous play and will experience activities such as sand and water play, role play, art and craft, small world, mark making. In addition we also offer Welsh classes. We encourage children to make independent decisions i.e. where they would like to play and what with. Children will develop new skills, discover new things about themselves and the world around them and learn to communicate with others. They also have the opportunity to use their imagination and be creative. In fact without play children cannot realise their full potential.

Within the nursery we aim to provide a happy and secure environment for the children in our care. All our activities are planned to help your child/ren continue his/her social, emotional, physical, creative and intellectual development. In this way your child/ren will gain self-confidence, independence, self-discipline and a positive self-image. We currently do not have any nursery pets or animals on the premises.
